Job Description

Who We Are

Carnegie Robotics partners with industry leaders across defense, commercial, and industrial sectors to deliver rugged autonomous robotic solutions designed for real-world environments. Our systems support applications including off-road autonomy, logistics, industrial inspection, mining, perception systems, and advanced autonomous vehicle operations. We thrive on solving difficult engineering challenges and deploying systems that perform reliably in demanding operational conditions.

Who We're Looking For

We are seeking highly motivated and adaptable engineers who are passionate about autonomous systems, field testing, and hands-on problem solving. Successful candidates will be comfortable working on a wide variety of robotic and autonomous vehicle programs while supporting testing, integration, troubleshooting, and operational deployments in both controlled and real-world environments.

This role is ideal for someone who enjoys working directly with cutting-edge technology, traveling to support field operations, and collaborating closely with engineering, operations, and customer teams to ensure mission success.

What You'll Be Doing

As a Field Test Engineer, you will support the integration, testing, troubleshooting, and deployment of Carnegie Robotics' autonomous systems across multiple programs and vehicle platforms. This role combines hands-on engineering support with operational field testing and requires the ability to rapidly diagnose and resolve issues in dynamic environments.

You will work alongside software, electrical, mechanical, and systems engineering teams to execute test plans, support platform integration efforts, collect and analyze operational data, and maintain fleet readiness for ongoing development and customer operations. The role will involve frequent travel to test sites and customer locations to support autonomous vehicle operations and demonstrations.

What Your Day-to-Day Looks Like

• Supporting autonomous vehicle testing operations across multiple programs and platforms

• Executing field testing activities, including vehicle setup, operational checklists, and system validation

• Troubleshooting mechanical, electrical, networking, and software-related issues on robotic systems

• Working directly with engineers to diagnose system faults and support rapid issue resolution

• Collecting and organizing operational logs, sensor data, and diagnostic information during testing activities

• Executing Linux command-line diagnostics and supporting software deployment activities

• Supporting hardware integration efforts including sensors, compute systems, networking equipment, and power systems

• Developing and improving test procedures, operational workflows, and field readiness processes

• Supporting customer demonstrations, operator training, and field deployments

• Traveling domestically to support testing events, customer operations, and program deployments

• Operating safely and effectively in outdoor and off-road testing environments under varying conditions

What You'll Have

• Strong troubleshooting and diagnostic skills across mechanical, electrical, and software systems

• Hands-on experience working with complex electromechanical systems or autonomous platforms

• Experience with Linux command-line tools and basic networking concepts

• Ability to read and interpret technical documentation, schematics, and system diagrams

• Strong organizational and communication skills with the ability to document technical findings clearly

• Comfortable working independently in field environments while collaborating closely with engineering teams

• Ability to lift and carry up to 40 lbs and support vehicle/equipment loading activities

• Valid driver's license and willingness to travel frequently for testing and deployment activities

How You'll Stand Out

• Previous experience supporting autonomous vehicle programs, robotics systems, UGVs, or field testing operations

• Experience with sensor integration including LiDAR, stereo cameras, GPS/INS systems, and networking hardware

• Familiarity with software deployment, scripting, or data analysis tools

• Experience operating vehicles or robotic systems in off-road environments

• Ability to remain calm and effective while troubleshooting systems under operational field conditions

• Strong understanding of field safety procedures and operational risk management

What You Get Out Of It

  • UPMC health coverage with FSA or HSA options
  • Comprehensive vision, dental, and life insurance
  • Fidelity401(k) plan with employer match
  • Free catered lunch on-site with vegan option
  • Free on-site parking
  • 31 days of PTO (including holidays)
  • Opportunities to travel and directly support advanced autonomous vehicle operations
  • Exposure to cutting-edge robotics and autonomy programs
  • Career growth opportunities across engineering, field operations, systems integration, and technical leadership.
