Mainframe Developer (COBOL/CICS/DB2) W2

Location: Remote

Duration: 6-12 Month Contract-Hire

Note:

• Candidate must complete a 20-30-minute online assessment, verify ID and answer 3 intermediate technical questions
• They also have to have a valid Manager or Lead reference with a verifiable LinkedIn profile
• Old LinkedIn with proper location

About :

This mainframe developer will be supporting critical business applications across multiple legacy and investment platforms. The team operates in a highly regulated environment and is responsible for maintaining, enhancing, and supporting systems that handle pension processing, long-term care products, and investment management workflows. These applications are foundational to financial operations, including benefits processing, regulatory/tax updates, and integration with external trading platforms. The systems ultimately support payment generation and financial transactions.

The environment is currently mainframe-heavy (COBOL/CICS/DB2) but is actively evolving, with long-term initiatives including:

• Migration away from CoolGen/CA-Gen to an IBM Java-based platform
• Broader cloud strategy (Google Cloud)
• Integration with distributed technologies (SQL/.NET ecosystem)

Systems handle:

• Benefits processing and payment generation
• Regulatory and tax updates
• Financial data flows and integrations

Must Have

• 5+ years of hands-on mainframe development experience
• Strong experience with:
  • COBOL
  • CICS
  • DB2
  • JCL
• Proven experience working across multiple mainframe technologies and tools (not siloed into one area)
• Experience supporting large, complex enterprise applications
• Ability to work effectively in a matrixed organizational structure
• Experience in highly regulated environments (e.g., healthcare, financial services, insurance)
• Strong problem-solving skills - able to determine the correct implementation approach when multiple technical paths exist (ex. COBOL vs JCL vs QMF)
• Self-starter mentality with the ability to work independently and take initiative

• Exposure to Java / IBM modernization tools

Others:

• Experience with CoolGen / CA-Gen / AllFusion Gen
  • Note: Environment is actively migrating away from this technology
• Experience working with or migrating to cloud platforms (Google Cloud preferred)
• Background in banking, pensions, or investment systems (strongly preferred for domain understanding)
• Experience integrating with trading or financial platforms (ex. State Street)
