Job Description

Job Summary:

The Sterile Processing Technician (SPT) is responsible for the decontamination, sterilization, assembly, and distribution of surgical instruments and equipment to support surgical services in an acute hospital setting. This role ensures the highest standards of infection control and instrument functionality to facilitate safe and effective surgical procedures. The SPT collaborates with the surgical team and adheres to established protocols and certification requirements to maintain sterile environments.

Responsibilities:
  • Decontaminate, clean, and sterilize surgical instruments and equipment according to established procedures.
  • Assemble surgical instrument trays and sets accurately for orthopedic, neurological, and robotic procedures.
  • Inspect instruments for functionality and defects, ensuring readiness for use in surgical cases.
  • Maintain inventory and proper storage of sterile supplies and instruments.
  • Document sterilization processes and maintain compliance with regulatory standards.
  • Collaborate with surgical staff to ensure timely and efficient instrument availability.
  • Participate in quality assurance and infection control activities within the sterile processing department.
Required Skills & Certifications:
  • Certification from CBSPD, CSPDT, IAHCSMM/HSPA, or NBSTSA is required.
  • Minimum of 1 year of experience in sterile processing or related field.
  • Knowledge of sterilization techniques and infection control standards.
  • Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced acute hospital environment.
Preferred Skills & Certifications:
  • Experience with orthopedic, neurological, and robotic surgical instrumentation.
  • Familiarity with Epic charting system.
  • Experience working in a Magnet hospital or Level II trauma center.
Special Considerations:
  • Must rotate through weekend coverage as required.
  • No on-call responsibilities.
  • Time off (RTO) approved on an individual basis and must be included in the submittal.
  • Traveler may be called off for one 8-hour shift per two weeks.
  • Scrub color provided by the facility.
  • Parking is free for staff.
  • Candidate's permanent address must be at least 50 miles from the facility; local candidates are not accepted.
Scheduling:
  • 13-week assignment length.
  • Shift options include 5 days a week, 8-hour evening shifts or 4 days a week, 10-hour shifts.
  • Guaranteed 72 hours per two weeks.
  • Block schedule accommodations are possible.
