Title of Course

H ** AVC 1Q98** Introduction to Visual Culture

Overview of visual culture, its vocabulary, technologies and structures within varied cultural contexts. Problems of meaning, functions of visual culture in contemporary society, the role of galleries and museums, and the impact of imagery in advertising, popular media and consumer culture. Contemporary critical methodology. Note: TA contract for this course will be 60 hours.

Schedule: Spring Term (Duration 8)

Course Dates: June 15, 2026 to July 17, 2026

Note: The synchronous portion is scheduled for Tuesday and Thursday 1030-1200.

Delivery Method: ONM (Online Mixed)

ONM – ONLINE MIXED : Both Synchronous and Asynchronous | Location: Fully Online |

A blended course that includes both synchronous and asynchronous elements delivered fully online. The synchronous components of the course requires real-time interactions with the course instructor and teaching assistants/lab demonstrators, on a set schedule. The asynchronous components (pre-recorded) can be viewed online without real-time interaction _._

Compensation 

Teaching Assistant, Course Coordinator and Lab Demonstrator positions are paid according to the qualifications that the employee holds. 

·         Employees who do NOT hold a 4-year honours degree or a 3-year pass degree will be paid the undergraduate rate - $22.07 per hour. (Rate effective September 1, 2024)

·         Employees who hold a 4-year honours degree or a 3-year pass degree will be paid the graduate rate - $34.73 per hour. (Rate effective September 1, 2024)

·         In cases where additional duties are required as part of a Teaching Assistant’s duties, these hours shall be compensated at the appropriate Teaching Assistant rate. 

Duties 

The duties and responsibilities of the Teaching Assistant shall be in accordance with Article 22 of the CUPE Local 4207, Unit 1, Collective Agreement. These are made up of scheduled contact time with students and non-classroom time (including preparation of seminar material, student consultation, marking or grading, examination proctoring, attending lectures, holding office hours, and other course administration as may be required.

Qualifications 

  1. Applicants must have completed a 4-year Honours BA degree in Visual Arts, Art History, or Visual Culture.

  2. The successful applicant must have effective communication skills including the ability to explain subject material to students, be punctual in attending classes, and be able to meet appropriate deadlines.

  3. Must be available to attend synchronous online lectures and be available for online synchronous and asynchronous course support.
